The "abolition team" likely refers to the historic abolitionist community in Brooklyn, particularly the area around Bridge Street and Duffield Street, which was a hub for the Underground Railroad. Active abolitionists like the Truesdell family lived at 227 Duffield Street, and the African Wesleyan Methodist Episcopal Church on Bridge Street was used to hide escaping slaves. Today, this area is commemorated by Abolitionist Place, a park at the intersection of Willoughby and Duffield Streets.
This is the team I’m fortunate to mentor. These young men, who have overcome incarceration, now stand beside me as partners in strengthening our community. Through entrepreneurship support groups, we’re creating awareness, opportunity, and lasting change in our neighborhoods.
Some of my favorite public servants—Congresswoman Velázquez, Attorney General Letitia James, and community advocate Eric Blackwell—took part in this event to support housing, healthcare, and employment opportunities.
